SANTA COMBA
River Xallas' born place

Santa Comba is the most typical cattle landscape, painted with green forests and fertile grasslands watered by crystalline waters.

Cattle lands of Galicia and old commercial tradition

Santa Comba's green watered and nostalgic lands inspired the Bard Eduardo Pondal:

Ouh, da terra de Xallas, feros corvos
que vagantes andas,
sen pensar no destino,
sen hoxe nen maña,
quen poidera ser voso companeiro
pola agreste soeda !

Oh, lands of Xallas, wild crows
that wandering you are,
without thinking about the future,
neither today neither tomorrow,
who could be your partner
in your rough solitude!

Santa Comba's green fields are the second milk production center of Galicia and one of the most important in Europe as far as its quality is concerned. The importance of its cattle economy is manifested in the annual bovine contest, one of the most reputed in Galicia.

Celebrated twice a month, the famous Fair of Santa Comba gathers merchants and buyers from Mazaricos, Zas, Coristanco, and Carballo. Other important fairs are celebrated on March the 11th and the 12th and on April the 24th.

Hunting and fishing

Santa Combas' forests and rivers are one of the best places in A Coruna province for hunting and fishing. Trouts are abundant in clearwater Abuin, Bazar and Xallas rivers.

Santa Comba conserves the remains of 15 ancient Celtic settlements, mainly the ones of San Bartolomeu in Busto, Santa Xavina; Boana de Riba in Castriz; Castro Laberco in Labradas, Mallon, and the one of Turnes in Bazar. It is worth as well to visit the typical Freixeiro village and its XII century church and sacred fountain. Some other interesting churches are the San Bartolomeu' Chapel, with nice views of the Xallas' valley; the Sanctuary of Rubin in Mallon, and Santa Maria de Vilamaior's church, where it is celebrated an important pilgrimage.
